NEW YEAR 2024/ SOLEMNITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

DEAR MAMA MARY…

LK. 2: 16-21

MESSAGE

Attending the evening novena and Benediction at the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help was a first for me. I responded to the companionship request of a dear old friend with a special intention. Despite being the last schedule of the day, the church teemed with faithful devotees from all walks of life. As the celebration unfolded, a tranquil atmosphere enveloped the sea of people, and everyone actively engaged in songs, prayers, moments of silence, and intercessions.

Gazing up at the revered icon of the Mother of Perpetual Help, I sensed the warm presence of my Heavenly Mother, continuously offering the world the gift of her only Son, Jesus. As the new year commenced, I pondered: Why does the Church designate Mary as the special patron of the very first day of the calendar? The Gospel distinctly reveals that God became man through this humble virgin. Mary not only bore Jesus in her womb but also carried Him to people eagerly awaiting news of God’s peace and joy. The shepherds discovered the Holy Infant in the company of Mary and Joseph. After much reflection and contemplation, Mary truly grasped the unparalleled miracle of God uniting Himself with humanity through the Incarnation.

In an era when we yearn for peace in our minds, hearts, families, communities, and places marred by war and conflict, Mary generously shares her Son, the Prince of Peace, with us. Catholics hold Mary in deep affection, akin to children towards their mothers. Remarkably, even those outside our faith demonstrate love and devotion to her, exemplified by a Muslim family I observed visiting her shrine alongside their Christian brothers and sisters.

REFLECT

Embark on the new year by aligning yourself with the woman closest to the heart of Our Lord. Don’t hesitate to approach Mary and seek her motherly guidance and protection. She is our mother in faith, and through her, we find the swiftest, easiest, and most effective way to the heart of the Lord Jesus Christ.
