FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD B (Three Kings)
IN HIS LIGHT
MT. 2: 1-12
MESSAGE
Wise men from the East, why do you seek this star? You have studied the heavens and seen myriads of luminous bodies. What is so special about this little one? How did you know that this star concealed a secret waiting to be revealed to all? Yes, this star, your star, will lead you to the Light. A little baby boy in a tiny, simple house with peasant parents awaits you. But do not be misled; this Child is truly the Son of God made man, the Light of the world. He is now your brother, your friend, your light. What Isaiah said is now happening to you: “darkness covers the earth, clouds cover the people, but the Lord shines on you; he appears to you in glory.” Because you sought him, because you found him, because you welcomed him in your hearts, you will keep this Light forever in your hearts!
And what about you, Herod? Why do you hate the star? Why do you fear this unknown and distant light? You hesitate to come out of the darkness because you have grown fond of it. Until now, you only know the comfort of your darkness – sin, power play, anger, envy, murder. Why do you hate the star that can bring Light into your life? This boy is not your competitor, not your opponent; he is born to be your Savior, too. His heart bleeds to see you wallow in the dark and find no reason to escape it. This Child is waiting for you to give him a chance to bring you out of darkness. He is mercy and forgiveness.
REFLECT
And you, my own heart, take some time to marvel at the Christmas lights and lanterns still adorning your home. Why do you put up these lights? Surely, for decoration, and yet, for another and deeper reason. These lights in your home are a symbol of Jesus the Light born on Christmas day. Did you encounter him in this season, which is about to end? Did you have the chance to renew your friendship with and love for him? Invite him today to be forever the Light of your life.
