5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME C
THE CALL OF THE ORDINARY
LK 5: 1-11
MESSAGE
The Lord Jesus sought companions—apostles—men who would journey w Him, preach the Good News, and cast out demons (Mk 3:16). At the Lake of Gennesaret, He found His first followers. What kind of people fit Jesus’ vision of apostles?
First, they were simple. Jesus called fishermen—ordinary, hardworking individuals who smelled of the sea, lacked formal education, and lived in poverty. Yet, they were steadfast, resilient, and committed to their work.
Second, they were honest. The Lord saw their humanity: moments of reluctance, frustration in failure, and resignation to life’s struggles. But He also saw their willingness to rise again, to persevere, and to overcome.
Third, they were imperfect. These men were aware of their flaws, unworthiness, and limitations. Yet, they were open to grace. The moment they encountered Jesus, they recognized Him as the Lord of their lives and surrendered to His call.
This is the beauty and miracle of God’s call. When you respond, simplicity transforms into wisdom; reluctance becomes courage; and sinners are renewed into faithful witnesses, leaving behind their past to walk boldly with the Lord.
REFLECT
Lord, I see myself in Your first apostles. I see my weaknesses, doubts, and imperfections reflected in them. Look upon me with the same gaze of love, call me with the same voice of hope, and place in me the same trust You gave to them.
