28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A
FEASTING WITH GOD
MT. 22:1-14
MESSAGE:
Different religions hold varying beliefs about life’s ultimate goal, whether it be heaven or God’s Kingdom. In Islam, it is described as a paradise where the faithful will receive their rewards. Unfortunately, some extremist interpretations misconstrue this as a place solely for sensual pleasure and enjoyment, which is a distortion of the true essence. In Buddhism, there is no specific doctrine about heaven; instead, the focus is on attaining Nirvana—a state where desires cease, and peace, purity, and truth prevail.
In today’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus portrays the Kingdom of God as a feast, a banquet, a wedding—a celebration. It’s not centered on material rewards or physical satisfaction but rather on a Kingdom characterized by joyful sharing, a lively presence, and a sense of belonging. Everything originates from God, who extends a generous invitation for people to join in and share His joy. St. Ignatius of Loyola taught that the best image of God is one who gives endlessly and abundantly. His desire to include people in His Kingdom is so immense that His guest list keeps expanding—first to the invited guests, then to all bystanders and strangers in the streets.
The Lord reminds us that the Father calls us to holiness, a calling not reserved for the perfect but extended to all people. It’s an invitation to a personal, deep, and living relationship. This is why the imagery of a feast is so apt—where one can freely converse, feel welcome, and enjoy companionship. Given God’s boundless generosity and sincerity, it’s understandable that He feels saddened when people overlook this remarkable opportunity to be with Him.
REFLECT:
How seriously do we take God’s invitation to establish a personal relationship with Him? Is your image of God aligned with His true nature as a generous and giving God? If not, take a moment to pray with the Gospel and seek the grace to remove any hesitation or reluctance to enter into the Lord’s banquet. As you prepare for Mass, remember that it represents the heavenly meal already accessible to us in our earthly lives.
