29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A
TO CAESAR AND TO GOD!
MT 22: 15-21
MESSAGE
“Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” Some may exclaim, “Aha, there you go!” as they interpret these words from the Lord Jesus as a call for separation – the division of church from state, of religion from politics, and of private life from public conduct. However, it’s essential to note that the Lord didn’t say, “Give to Caesar… BUT to God…” Instead, He said, “Give to Caesar… AND to God…” In these words, the Lord emphasizes not rupture but relationship between these two aspects of life. Although we may inhabit two distinct arenas, we possess one self, not two selves moving in opposing directions. Clearly, there exists a connection, necessitating the integration of our existence in the world with our faith in God.
In the world, Christians must conduct themselves appropriately and set a good example for others, not only by adhering to the law or rightful authority but also by serving as a prophetic presence when required. The Lord Jesus respected the laws of His people but also sought to infuse them with the values of the Father’s Kingdom. Many devout Christians, including saints of the past and present, in their pursuit of being responsible citizens, have championed the purification of worldly values with Gospel values. Some have paid, and some continue to pay, a high price for proclaiming the sovereignty of God and the dignity of human life. Their inspiration, and what should inspire us as well, is faith in God. Fueled by this faith, we must not merely conform to the world but strive to transform all things in accordance with God’s vision.
Reflect
Do you project a different persona when you are out in the world compared to when you are inside the church? Is your faith in Jesus the driving force that motivates you to live truthfully, promote peace, and assist your fellow human beings? This week, during Mass, let us pray for the harmonization of our personal faith with our public service in the world.
“Let us pray daily for peace in our hearts, in our country, and in the world, esp. in the Middle East, Ukraine, and in other parts of the world in volatile situations. Lord, grant us Your peace! Amen.”
