2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME B

BEHOLD THE LAMB!

Jn. 1: 35-42

MESSAGE

During the Mass, as the priest utters the profound words, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” our minds are transported back to the moment when John the Baptist first spoke these words in today’s Gospel. In that poignant instant, as Jesus passed before John, the Baptist couldn’t help but recall Isaiah’s prophecy of the “lamb led to slaughter” – the Suffering Servant destined to fulfill God’s will and redeem His people from sin.

John’s proclamation had an inexplicable magnetic effect on two of his disciples, compelling them to follow Jesus into an uncertain destiny. Andrew, one of these disciples, later brought his brother Cephas into the fold. Renamed Peter, he too became a devoted disciple.

Feel the energy in this narrative. There’s an indefinable quality in Jesus that resonates with people, prompting them to seek, follow, and listen to Him. A profound yearning is satisfied, a promise fulfilled, and a restlessness finds repose in the person of Jesus. He is the long-awaited Messiah and Savior.

The invitation of Jesus, “Come and see,” intensifies their desire to listen and embark on His path. The eventual sacrifices of Andrew and Peter—Andrew’s death on an X-shaped cross and Peter’s crucifixion upside down—all trace back to this initial burning desire to follow the Lamb of God. Yet, the impending pain, suffering, and trials did not deter them. Nothing could sever their connection to the greatest discovery of their lives.

REFLECT

Take a moment during the next Mass to attune yourself to the words of the priest. As he declares, “Behold the Lamb of God,” direct your gaze to the Body of Christ. Feel your heart quicken, and allow the excitement to swell within you at the realization that you are in the presence of Jesus, the Savior. Listen closely. Can you discern His voice calling you to follow Him? Is there a readiness within you, akin to the first disciples, to offer your entire heart and life to Him, placing complete trust in His guidance for a new adventure of faith? As the congregation unites in the plea, “Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us!” let these words echo within you, a sincere acknowledgment of your need for His mercy and a reaffirmation of your commitment to walk the path set before you by the Lamb of God.
