SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST BLESSED TRINITY B
WHY THE TRINITY MAKES SENSE
MT 28: 16-20
MESSAGE
The Christian faith is unique among all those who believe that God is One (monotheism). We believe in One God with equal and eternal Three Persons sharing love and unity. We profess this because of Who revealed this to us: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” Jesus proclaimed and promised that this mystery is true! So the Trinity makes sense for us in our daily life of faith. How?
- The Trinity is about relationships. Life on earth, especially human life, is about relationships. One God, in other religions, simply becomes a Creator, an Architect, a Divine Mind that does not connect with another outside itself. But Christianity’s One God reveals himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit to teach us that He desires to be united to us, to communicate with us, to dwell within us. He deals with us not from a position of authority, power, or domination but in a relationship we can trust, accept, and treasure.
- The Trinity is God Who is concrete. In life we are not simply satisfied with general, abstract, or conceptual realities. We want to see, hear, touch, and know for ourselves. God so loves us that he makes himself available to us. That is why Jesus became our brother, who draws us closer to the Father. That is why the Holy Spirit is not out there but deep in our hearts as we pray, love and serve one another. God is concrete because his closeness cannot be denied; it is all around us. You can pinch yourself and find out, this is not just a pleasant dream!
- The Trinity is family. We speak of the “human family”, the “family of nations”, the “family of all creation”. And yet, where does all this sense of family come but from the God who started it all? God who relates with us, who is concrete in our experience of faith, is “Family” of Father, Son and Spirit. The love of this divine Family overflows to us and takes us into its fold and its embrace.
REFLECT
This week, pray slowly the short prayer, “Glory be to the Father,” relishing every word. Open your heart to know and feel that God is concrete as he touches your life as Father, Brother, and Friend. Ask for the grace to form meaningful relationships with others especially with those who need the compassion and care of a family, mirroring the life and love of the Trinity.
